Como is a city of almost 100,000 residents at the tip of the western branch of Lake Como. Of Roman origin, in the past it was at the same level of Milan. Between the two cities there were many wars in the Middle Ages. At the time of Frederick Barbarossa Como was his ally. In the Renaissance period Como was part of the territory of Milan.
The city is home to many important monuments, starting from the Duomo, one of the main cathedrals of northern Italy. There are many other important churches, like the Romanesque Basilica of San Carpoforo, the Basilica of Sant'Abbondio (Romanesque church with frescoes of the eleventh century), the Basilica of San Fedele, Romanesque, and many others. Como is also rich in civil buildings of historical and artistic interest, starting with the Broletto (the ancient city Hall), Villa Olmo and the music academy of the city, already Large Hospital of St. Anne, completed in 1485.
Visiting Como is worth extending the to Brunate, a country known for its numerous villas in eclectic and art nouveau style and reached by a funicular from Como.
Como is easily reached from Milan with both the trains of Trenitalia and those those of Trenord.
