The Institute of the Blinds of Milan is housed in a large building in the center, built on purpose with project by the architect Joseph Pirovano. The building comprehends a central body, which includes the concert hall, and two lateral symmetrical wings, bordering on two arcaded courtyards divided in half by an elegant loggia.
The facade of the building, sober and linear, with in front of it a large area with flower beds and trees, is divided into three levels (ground floor, first floor and second floor) and shows the central part slightly advanced and crowned by a pediment gabled.
The entrance is marked by a colonnade of Doric columns, separated from the rest of the interior by a wrought iron gate of fine workmanship. On the left there is a marble slab which reminds the visitor of the inauguration of the new headquarter of the Institute, which took place November 3, 1892 in the presence of the King Umberto I and the Queen Margherita.
The concert hall, also called room Barozzi, is richly decorated in eclectic style (note the similarities with the decorations inside the Basilica of San Calimero, dating from the same period). It includes a large balcony and a large organ. Behind the concert hall there is a further room, initially acting as a chapel.
Around the grand staircase are placed paintings with portraits of benefactors of the Institute. Upstairs, where you are greeted by an elegant atrium with on the wall a large painting by Francesco de Magistris of the founder of the Institute Michele Barozzi, there is room Stoppani, the smaller gala hall, while the walls are covered with paintings of other benefactors of the institute.
The second floor, finally, houses the collections of the Braille Museum, with documents, instruments and different objects relating to the history of writing methods used over time by the blinds.
The exterior is characterized by beautiful colonnades that surround the inner courtyards.
The Institute of the Blind of Milan has a rich heritage of hundreds of works of art, paintings and sculptures, become part of the collection of the Institute through donations and bequests from benefactors.
The Institute of the Blind of Milan works to promote "independence, autonomy, choice of educational opportunities and cultural rights of the visually impaired through research, study, training and the provision of necessary services for education, personal development, professional and everyday life management. "
The Historical Archive and Stock Photo are open and accessible to the public by appointment.
