Monza is a city of more than 100,000 inhabitants, but being a short distance from Milan, it is a bit overshadowed by the capital of Lombardy.
In fact Monza is a city rich in history and art. Already existing in the Roman period, the city experienced a period of great political importance and of intense artistic development during the seventh century, when it was the summer capital of the Lombard kingdom. Later the city entered into the domains of the Holy Roman Empire, albeit with a large margin of autonomy, and finally, the eleventh century, became part of the Milan territory.
Monza is home of countless churches of great artistic value, starting from the Duomo, which houses the famous Iron Crown, which, following the tradition, should contain one of the nails used for the crucifixion of Christ, ancient palaces and public buildings, such as, for example, the Longobard Tower and the Arengario. Furthermore there is the Royal Villa of Monza and the adjoining park, the largest park enclosed by walls in the world.
Monza is easily reached from Milan with both the trains of Trenitalia and those those of Trenord.
