Veglio (Biella)- Parish Church of St. John the Baptist

Show to visit in the Biella area: |
The present church is a reconstruction of the late seventeenth century of the pre-existing sixteenth-century church. The church, with a single nave, was restored in 1844; the interior decoration is of Pietro Lace of Andorno (1696), the same artist who painted the frescos in the Sanctuary of the Moorland in Trivero. Interesting works are: the main altar with balustrade in polychrome marble, of the seventeenth century, the altar of the rosary and the case of the baptistery, typical examples of local crafts wooden sculpture of the seventeenth century. The bell tower of the eighteenth century.
The church exterior is linear and almost monochrome. At the main door there is a vestibule in neoclassical style. The interior contrasts sharply with the outside, since it is richly decorated. In particular the vault is completely covered with colorful frescoes, with scenes separated by stucco frames full of curves and flourishes. Curious is the pairing of orange as the background color for the ceiling and the gray (in various shades) of the stuccos and of the pilasters.
