The Botanical Garden of Brera is a quiet corner in the center of Milan. Completely surrounded by high walls, from outside it presence can not intuited. It is a typical example of how in Milan the green is usually inside the buildings, and not in front of them. This is the main reason of the false belief that Milan is a city with little green.
In the present configuration, the Botanical Garden of Brera was established in 1774 when Maria Theresa of Austria decided that the former Jesuit garden had to become an institution with educational and scientific purposes for students of medicine and pharmacy. At that time it was mostly a place for the cultivation of medicinal plants for the partial supply of Apothecary of Brera, destined to public service in the city. Today the Botanical Garden is an historic garden and retains many vestiges of the past: they are the '700 the two elliptical pools, while the' 800 greenhouses is today in use at the Academy of Fine Arts, the small Observatory (where a transit telescope of 1870 was inserted) as well as the structures of the classroom teaching and the flower beds that make up the garden. Walking along the paths of the Garden, the occasions of observation are countless all year long, you can meet old trees and specimens that stand out for the generous scale or for the unusual shape of the leaves, fruits or trunk, or interesting collections, such as medicinal plants, the ones of the genus Salvia or that of spring bulbs planted with perennials.
