Mostly represented styles: Baroque - Rococò
The church of San Franceco Paola is one of the leading examples of late Baroque and Rococo buildings in Milan. Its construction began in 1728, at a point where there had already been a church, commissioned by the Minims and based on a project of Marco Antonio Bianchi, with a planimetry reinding the form of contrabbass. The church was opened for worship in 1735, but the facade was not completed until much later, in 1891, by architect Alemagna.
Despite its construction took so long, the church is stylistically unified, by virtue of the fact that the facade was built in neo-baroque style, after a long discussion about which project should be privileged, the neobrocco one, by Alemagna , or the one in neoclassical style of Carlo Amati. In this discussion also intervened Carlo Cattaneo.
The church is characterized by a sinuous plant in the manner of the Roman Baroque. The façade is characterized by an alternation of concave and convex. The interiors, rich of decorations, stuccos and gildings, as typical of Baroque and Rococo, has a single nave and features curved lines that make spaces more dynamic. The gray-lilac of some part of the walls, however, make the environment a little dark and off. The rich altar of mixed marble, semi-precious stones, gilded bronzes and with candlesticks made by the Roman goldsmiths.
