Nur englische Beschreibung:
Third episode of the series Oenological trips, ie trips aimed at combining the discovery of Italian villages and towns with the tasting of wines at the cellars that produce them.
This time we will go to Montù Beccaria (Pavia), where, in the first part of the trip, we will taste the production of the farm Il Poggiolo. Then we will visit the nearby town of Stradella to discover its cultural heritage.
TASTING The idea is to be there late in the morning, or for 11.30 approx. There will therefore be the time to visit the cellar and its vineyards to know its history and appreciate the views and the panoramas that the Oltrepò countryside offers in quantity. It deserves to be underlined that the cellar is in an absolutely panoramic position: see Fig. 1! The company produces white, rosè and red wines, dry and sweet, firm and with sparkles. More details: Wines produced by the cellar il Poggiolo:
VISIT TO STRADELLA Stradella is a town in approx. 11000 inhabitants in the province of Pavia. Of medieval origins, the original village was located on a low hill immediately south of the current town, in correspondence with what is today the fraction of Montalino. It is only around the thirteenth century that the current Stradella takes over, as a urban center, on Montalino, which slowly reduces to a simple fraction of the municipality of Stradella, while retaining its military importance. Since the middle of the eleventh century Montalino with Stradella (cited as Stratella in 1029) belonged to the episcopal properties of the diocese of Pavia, indeed constituting the most important center of the lordship. In 1164 he passed with the Oltrepò under the Pavese jurisdiction, however continuing, under it, being property of the diocese. The lordship of the bishop, count of Stradella, ceased in 1797 with the abolition of feudalism. Things to see in Stradella:
- Church of Saints Nabore and Felice (Fig. 2): the current parish church was built in the neoclassical style in the years 1834-1837, after the bell tower of the previous church, collapsing, had irreparably damaged it. It contains several valuable art works, including the canvas with the subject The Assumpted Virgin, performed by Pacifico Sidoli, the choir, built in 1804 by Gaspare Crespi, the two frescoes portrayed the Preaching of Jesus and The Last Dinner, painted by Antonio Villa, the organ, mounted in 1839 by Giacomo Serassi, and the altarpiece depicting the Transit of San Giuseppe, painted by Placido Coralli in 1754. The church has a crypt/scurl.
- Basilica of San Marcello in Montalino (Fig. 2): It is the old medieval parish of the country. The history of the basilica can be divided into three periods: from the origin to 1500, birth and splendor, from 1500 to 1900, the decadence and from 1900 to today the tiring recovery and restoration. Inside the apses there are the remains of ancient frescoes, very damaged, which came to light during the restoration of 1958.
- Tower with the bellfry (Fig. 4): it is a last remaining tower of a late medieval fortress on which in 1835 it was placed "temporarily" the bellfry of the parish church, collapsed in that year.
- Civic Naturalistic Museum "Ferruccio Lombardi": the Naturalistic Museum of Stradella was born as a museum of the Po in the late 1970s against various finds of fossilized bones of prehistoric animals, vegetable fossils, of Ancient human remains and settlements along the banks of the Po and in the surroundings. represent today the naturalistic environment of the whole Oltrepò.
- Museum Accordion Museum of "Mariano Dallapè" (Fig. 5): Inaugurated on 20 May 1999, baptized by the singer-songwriter Paolo Conte, the Stradella accordion museum was established the year 1997 with resolution of the city city council. The goal was to preserve the memory of an exhilarating segment of local history that had made known the small laborious Stradella throughout the planet.
- Davide Locatelli Palace, called 'Palazzo Longhi': it is the house of the noble family Grattoni, which in 1870 Davide Locatelli let restore on the design of the architect Zuccari Milan. Inside there are pleasantly frescoed halls.
